Exploring the Health Sciences at the National Research Council

Panellists:

1. Chris Corbeil, Ph.D.  |  Research Officer, Human Health Therapeutics, National Research Council Canada

Christopher received his Ph.D. from McGill University under the supervision of Prof. Nicolas Moitessier. After his Ph.D., he joined the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) as a Research Associate under the supervision of Dr. Enrico Purisima where he investigated the basics of protein-binding affinity. Following his time at the NRC he joined Chemical Computing Group as a Research Scientist developing tools for biologics design. After 4 years, he decided to leave private industry and rejoin NRC as a Research Officer where he focuses on applying structure-based drug design tools to engineer novel protein therapeutics.

2. Scott McComb, Ph.D.  |  Research Officer, NRC Human Health Therapeutics Research Centre &

Adjunct Professor, University of Ottawa Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Immunology

As a researcher, I am seeking to push forward the technology needed for re-engineering highly effective, safe, and accessible (affordable!) cellular therapies for cancer and other diseases. Through the development of novel genome editing tools and high-throughput/highly automated synthetic biology-driven bioassays, I believe I can make a real impact on the health of Canadians. As a researcher within the NRC-CGT challenge, I am working with leading researchers across the country to push the development of next-generation cell and gene therapies, and to bring these therapies to clinical trial within Canada as soon as possible. I am also appointed as an adjunct professor within the University of Ottawa Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Immunology; currently, I am supervising one MSc student, one Ph.D. student, and several undergraduate co-op and honour’s students performing synthetic biology driven research projects.

3. Janelle Sauvageau, Ph.D.  |  Research Officer, Human Health Therapeutics, National Research Council

Janelle Sauvageau did her bachelor's and master’s degree at Laval University in chemistry. After having worked for 2 years as an analytical chemist at the Center for Environmental Research and Environmental Technology (UFT) in Bremen (Germany), she moved to New Zealand where she worked as a research scientist at Industrial Research Limited (IRL). After obtaining an enterprise full-bright scholarship to do her Ph.D. as a collaboration between Victoria University of Wellington and IRL, Janelle was repatriated to Canada by the NRC in 2013 to perform work on adjuvants due to her glycolipid synthetic knowledge. Janelle has become a research officer at NRC in summer 2018 and is now also an adjunct prof. at INRS (Armand-Frappier) and l’Université Laval. She works on the synthesis of immunomodulators and her main project is on the synthesis of heptoses phosphates as a potential cure against HIV. She has filed 3 patents and has authored 19 publications.
