- Discuss the career paths of the panelists
- Introduce the current events and challenges impacting the higher education space
Target Audience:
Everyone is welcome! Students, post-doctoral fellows, and professionals who are seeking to understand the public health profession.
Panelists:
Willem Peppler | Research/Awards Officer, York University
Will Peppler completed a Ph.D. in Human Health and Nutritional Sciences from the University of Guelph in 2018, focusing on the metabolic adaptations of the liver to exercise. Immediately after, he began a postdoctoral fellowship at the Toronto General Hospital Research Institute of University Health Network, investigating the metabolic impact of small intestine nutrient sensing. For the past year, he has been employed outside of a laboratory environment as a Research/Awards Officer within the Lassonde School of Engineering at York University, and is working as part of the administration team to support the research endeavors of the School.
Sarah Bates | Manager of Research and Graduate Studies, College of Biological Science, University Guelph
Sarah Bates supports research and grant development, graduate training and research communication. She received her BSc from the University of Guelph ('97) and her MSc ('99) and PhD ('02) from Simon Fraser University. She then completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Cornell University, fully expecting to next pursue a research position in academia or government. However, an unexpected job opportunity came her way that took her career in an unplanned direction, and she has been working in (and loving!) a variety of research administration roles ever since. These positions have included a science writer at a national research foundation (BIOCAP Canada), manager of a national research network (NSERC-CANPOLIN), a grants officer (U Guelph) and her current role as a college research and grad manager.
Steven Liss | Vice-President Research and Innovation, Ryerson University
David Litchfield | Vice Dean, Research & Innovation, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry
